Types of research data

The way we typically define them, we call data 'quantitative' if it is in numerical form and 'qualitative' if it is not. Notice that qualitative data could be much more than just words or text. Photographs, videos, sound recordings and so on, can be considered qualitative data.

Because there are multiple methods that may be appropriate for collecting data for the approach you have chosen, you will need to spend some time considering which method is the best fit. Factors that should be considered when selecting a method include the objectives of the research, feasibility, time, funding, logistics, experience of research team, the type of participants and so forth.

Quantitative research

The approach to data collection and analysis is methodical but allows for greater flexibility than in quantitative research. Data is collected in textual form on the basis of observation and interaction with the participants e.g.
